Allium sativum, commonly known as garlic, which is from the onion family, has been used for centuries as a medicinal food to boost the immune system and is a vital ingredient in many recipes. Garlic is easy to grow and if you haven’t planted yours yet, now is the time to do it.
Australian grown garlic can be hard to come by so once you do find it, use it to plant your own future garlic supplies. Follow these easy steps to grow it at your place this year:
1) Choose your spot. Garlic like full sun to part shade but it is important to pick a well-drained spot to prevent rot.
2) Prepare soil by adding organic matter a few weeks before planting.
3) Buy Australian organic garlic, try your local farmers market.4) Break the head up into seperate cloves and plant them so the pointy tip of the clove is approximately 1.5 – 2cm below the ground. Plant 10 – 15cm apart.
5) Keep the plants free of weeds, water regularly and fertilise. Remember to add mulch so that the soil stays moist.
6) Wait until after the flower has started to die then gently lift up from underneath and pull on the stem. They should come out easily.
7) Once harvested place them somewhere to dry out, this may take a few weeks.
